The hat is knitted around in structure based on garter st and stockinette st, and with rib knitting on ear flaps and edge. You start by knitting the i-cord strings and increase to ear flaps, so you avoid assembly. In the pattern there is an alternative where you can knit the hat without the strings and ear flaps from 1.5 years and up. This is a thin and lovely hat that is good to have both as part of a newborn set, to and from kindergarten, and out for a walk.
